The Up-Down Crochet Blanket Pattern
Learn to crochet this Up-Down Crochet Blanket Pattern for beginners. This crochet blanket pattern uses two familiar stitches… the half-double crochet and slip stitches to create this pretty stitch. As you combine these two foundational crochet stitches you will see a beautiful texture immerge in this beautiful crochet blanket. This has recently become one of my favorites to use in a number of places like washcloths and ear bands.

Pattern Instructions:
- ch 197(or your desired length); turn
- This sets the length of the afgan. Make it however long you want but be sure it’s an odd number.
- Row 1 – sc into the 2nd ch from hook and each ch there after. [196 stitches – or an EVEN number of stitches]
- ch 2 and turn
- Row 2 – hdc into the first st, *sl-st into next, hdc into next*, repeat between * * until the end of the row [196]. You will end with the sl-st at the end of the row.
- ch 2 and turn
- Rows 3- end – Repeat Row 2 until the afgan measures as long as you would like.
- 2nd to last row – Ch 1 and turn, sl-st into first st, *hdc into next, sl-st into next*, repeat between * * until the end of the row [196]
*This will even out the edge of the afghan.
- Last row – sc into the 2nd ch from hook and each st there after. [196 stitches]
- Finish with a sl-st in the final st; pull through and secure
- Weave in all loose ends with a darning/yarn needle
**Make sure to count your stitches on each row to be [ xx ] before you proceed to the next. This will ensure your afghan has straight edges 🙂

Thank you for this lovely pattern. I would like to make it into a baby blanket size and as I am a beginner to crochet, I would like to know how long my foundation chain should be.
Thank you,

Hi Zahava. Thank you for taking time to view my pattern. For a baby blanket, make the chain as long as you wish the width to be. About 30-40 inches would be good making sure that your chain is an odd number so so when you turn of the row of single crochet you end up with one less (an even number) so the stitch multiple of (2) works out on the next rows. Then just keep crocheting rows until you get the length you desire (about 50-60 inches)!
