For crocheters who prefer to learn visually, I have also created a step-by-step YouTube tutorial (link above) that demonstrates the process of making this blanket from start to finish. If you enjoy having a video guide alongside the written instructions, be sure to watch the tutorial as you work through the pattern. If you’d rather crochet without advertisements or scrolling through a blog post, an ad-free printable PDF version of this pattern is also available in my Etsy shop (link above).
One of the things I enjoy most about crochet is finding stitch patterns that look impressive without requiring complicated techniques. The blanket stitch is exactly that kind of stitch. By combining basic crochet stitches in a repeating pattern, you create a fabric that has a soft woven appearance, plenty of drape, and just enough texture to keep the project interesting from beginning to end.
This blanket is made using medium weight #4 yarn and a 6 mm crochet hook, making it an approachable project for crocheters of many skill levels. If you know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet, you already have all the skills needed to create this blanket. The stitch repeat is simple enough for beginners while remaining enjoyable for experienced crocheters who want a relaxing project to work on while watching television, listening to a podcast, or traveling.
The blanket stitch has been a favorite among crocheters for many years because of its versatility. Depending on your yarn choice, it can create everything from lightweight baby blankets to cozy throws for the living room. For this project, the stitch pattern creates a soft and comforting fabric that is perfect for wrapping around a new baby, using in a stroller, or keeping nearby during tummy time.
As a mechanical engineer and instructor, I naturally appreciate patterns that are built on simple systems. The blanket stitch follows a predictable rhythm that makes it easy to learn and easy to troubleshoot. Once you understand the repeat, the blanket practically guides you through the rest of the project. Instead of constantly referring back to the pattern, you can settle into the flow of the stitches and enjoy watching the blanket grow row by row.
Another reason I love this pattern is how adaptable it is. You can easily customize the size by adjusting your starting chain. Create a smaller receiving blanket, a larger crib blanket, or even a full-sized throw using the exact same stitch pattern. The flexibility makes this one of those crochet techniques that you will likely return to again and again for future projects.
Yarn choice can completely change the look of the finished blanket. Soft pastels create a classic baby blanket feel, while bold modern colors can give the pattern an entirely different personality. Self-striping yarns work beautifully with the blanket stitch because the simple texture allows the color changes to become the focal point. Solid colors highlight the stitch definition and create an elegant, timeless look.
This project is also an excellent opportunity to practice maintaining consistent tension. The combination of single crochet and double crochet stitches naturally encourages an even rhythm, helping newer crocheters build confidence while creating something beautiful and useful. By the end of the blanket, many crocheters find that their stitch consistency has improved significantly simply through repetition and practice.
Whether you are making a handmade gift for a baby shower, creating a keepsake for a special little one, or adding another easy crochet baby blanket pattern to your collection, this project offers the perfect balance of simplicity and style. The finished blanket has a classic appearance that never goes out of fashion, making it a piece that can be treasured for years to come.

Tips for yarn selection:
- Use yarns with the same soft fiber (acrylic or cotton) type and weight for all the colors to keep your rows even.
- Select soft pastels with similar undertones (cool or warm) in the same yarn family.
- You can pick any colors you like to personalize and customize.
Hook Choice:
- I chose a J/6mm crochet hook. This is the hook size recommended on the ball band of the skein. Most 4mm yarns will suggest 5mm. You can choose either, but know that your blanket will measure smaller if you use a smaller hook than 6mm.

Finishing Your Blanket | Optional Border

A simple border ties everything together, hides the color changes on the edges, and gives your blanket a polished, heirloom-quality.
- Round 1: Continue with Color 1, start mid span on any side, pull through a stitch and chain 1, sc into each st, 3 sc in each corner stitch, sl-st to the first sc in the round, tie off and weave in the ends.

- Round 3: Continuing with Color 1; start in any st around the perimeter, pull through and ch 1; rsc (reverse single crochet) in all st around the blanket
- Corners: only do 1 rsc in each
- sl-st into the first stitch in this round
- Finish by weaving in all ends
