In this blog post, I will walk you through how to crochet a pumpkin that’s perfect for adding a touch of the fall season to your home. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or an absolute beginner, this fun project is quick, easy, and customizable. With just a few simple stitches and some yarn, you’ll be able to make your own pumpkins in various sizes and colors to create the perfect autumn vibe.
Below you will find the free patterns to create three sizes of crochet pumpkins. What makes this an easy project is that you will crochet a rectangle using just 2 familiar stitches, the slip-stitch and the half-double crochet.

Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- st – stitch
- hdc – half double crochet stitch
- sl-st – slip stitch
- BLO – Back Loop Only

SMALL Crochet Pumpkin Pattern Instructions:
- ch 13, turn
- Row 1 – hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, *sl-st into next chain, hdc into next chain*, repeat between * * until the end of chains [12] (end on a sl-st; measures about 4″ wide)
- ch 1, turn
- Row 2 – hdc into the BLO of the first st, *sl-st in the BLO of the next st, hdc in the BLO of the next st*, repeat between * * until the end of the row [12] (end on a sl-st)
- Rows 3-21ish – Repeat Row 2 until you have a rectangle that is 2-times as long as the width (4″ wide x 8″ long)
- ch 1, turn
- sl-st to create a closed tube working into the BLO of each side
- Tie off and cut a tail about 6-8″ long
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close
- Fill pumpkin with poly-fill of your choice while keeping your ‘tail’ upright
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close leaving a hole large enough to insert a small stick for the stem
- Tie off and secure
- Insert a small stick for the stem and hot glue into place
- Tie a jute/twine bow around the stem to finish
MEDIUM Crochet Pumpkin Pattern Instructions:
- ch 21, turn
- Row 1 – hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, *sl-st into next chain, hdc into next chain*, repeat between * * until the end of chains [20] (end on a sl-st; measures about 6″ wide)
- ch 1, turn
- Row 2 – hdc into the BLO of the first st, *sl-st in the BLO of the next st, hdc in the BLO of the next st*, repeat between * * until the end of the row [20] (end on a sl-st)
- Rows 3-?? – Repeat Row 2 until you have a rectangle that is 2-times as long as the width (6″ wide x 12″ long)
- ch 1, turn
- sl-st to create a closed tube working into the BLO of each side
- Tie off and cut a tail about 6-8″ long
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close
- Fill pumpkin with poly-fill of your choice while keeping your ‘tail’ upright
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close leaving a hole large enough to insert a small stick for the stem
- Tie off and secure
- Insert a small stick for the stem and hot glue into place
- Tie a jute/twine bow around the stem to finish
LARGE Crochet Pumpkin Pattern Instructions:
- ch 29, turn
- Row 1 – hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, *sl-st into next chain, hdc into next chain*, repeat between * * until the end of chains [28] (end on a sl-st; measures about 9″ wide)
- ch 1, turn
- Row 2 – hdc into the BLO of the first st, *sl-st in the BLO of the next st, hdc in the BLO of the next st*, repeat between * * until the end of the row [28] (end on a sl-st)
- Rows 3-?? – Repeat Row 2 until you have a rectangle that is 2-times as long as the width (9″ wide x 18″ long)
- ch 1, turn
- sl-st to create a closed tube working into the BLO of each side
- Tie off and cut a tail about 6-8″ long
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close
- Fill pumpkin with poly-fill of your choice while keeping your ‘tail’ upright
- Using your yarn needle, base stitch around the end and cinch tight to close leaving a hole large enough to insert a small stick for the stem
- Tie off and secure
- Insert a small stick for the stem and hot glue into place
- Tie a jute/twine bow around the stem to finish
